The Sound of Music
I have had an opportunity to be included in a music therapy group by opening up our building so they have a place to meet. After four weeks of sessions, I have come to the conclusion that music really does make the world a better place to be. It unites people in a very special way. I’m reminded of how many times I’ve been to a live music event and stood between a guy in a business suit on one side and a biker on the other. All standing there because we love the music. Economic differences, political differences and who knows what else might come between a crowd of people all put aside for a time of togetherness, brought together by music. As a musician, I get to see this play out when performing. A guitar and a microphone can be a powerful thing, and you witness people relieve themselves of their weekly stresses and getting lost in the music being played. Songs that remind us of a different place in time, of fond memories with people that we love. Remembering the “time when” and connecting that with what was being played on the radio. The impact can be spiritual and keeps us connected to each other in a profound way. I’m thankful for the experiences of the last four weeks. It’s a reminder that my passion for music goes well beyond just me, it can be and is therapeutic.
